Countryside summer style: Layering outfits for picnics, lunches and long evenings

An English summer is rarely one thing all day. It can begin with blue skies and a basket packed for a picnic, turn blustery by lunchtime, warm again in the afternoon, then cool as soon as the sun slips behind the trees. All the seasons in a single day.

For countryside dressing, this is part of the charm. The trick is not to dress for one perfect forecast, but to build an outfit that can move with the day.

This is exactly where An Acre of Land garments come into their own. Made in natural fabrics and designed to be worn in layers, they are built for the shifting rhythm of English summer weather: never too hot, never too cool, and easy to adapt from morning to evening.

Why layering matters for an English summer outfit

In England, summer weather often asks a little more of our clothes. Mornings can be cool, afternoons warm, and evenings unexpectedly chilly, especially if you are sitting outside for any length of time.

This is where layers become useful. One of our light jackets, waistcoat or our Over Coat can be added or removed as the weather changes, without making the outfit feel too heavy or overdone.

The best countryside outfits are practical, comfortable and beautiful in use. They are made for sitting on picnic blankets, walking across fields, browsing country fairs, eating outdoors, and staying outside a little longer than planned.

Start with breathable natural fabrics

For summer in the countryside, natural fabrics are always the best place to begin. Cotton and linen breathe well, feel comfortable against the skin, and soften beautifully with wear.

An Acre of Land pieces are designed with this in mind. The garments are made to layer naturally, so you can build an outfit that feels light and breathable in the warmth, but still has enough substance when the air cools.

A simple cotton dress or perhaps a blouse with a skirt can all make a useful base. The first layer should feel complete on its own, so that if the day warms up, the outfit still feels considered when the top layer comes off.

The Over Coat
£155.00

The best coats are the ones you reach for without thinking. The ones that have been on the back of the door so long, they feel like part of the house.

Flung over your shoulder on the way out, thrown over a dress at the last moment, pulled on at the end of an afternoon when the temperature drops just enough to need something. The Over Coat is that coat.

It’s a light and breezy addition to a spring/summer wardrobe, and substantial enough to feel like proper outerwear.

Garment description

Cut from hand-loomed cotton in a generous, unstructured shape, the Over Coat fastens with a single button at the front and falls somewhere between a coat and a coverall.

A small pleat at the waist is echoed in the sleeve, a quiet detail that gives the coat its shape and coherence. In-seam pockets.

Available in two fabrics:

Blue check hand-loomed cotton

Blue chambray hand-loomed cotton

The Zawn Waistcoat
£145.00

Zawn. A Cornish word for a wave-smashed chasm in a sea-cliff. Something carved out by the sea over a very long time, dramatic and particular and entirely its own.

The Zawn Waistcoat goes over everything, under everything, holds an outfit together without asking for much attention.

Garment description

Cut from 100% linen with a cotton lining, the Zawn Waistcoat follows the tradition of The Keeper Waistcoat: good design, considered fit, a nod to clothes worn in our history and brought into today's wardrobe.

A back tab tightens with buttons or by tying the straps, which are double sided so can be worn either way. The new design features a fixed buttoned tab where the straps can be tied or replaced entirely with silk ties or handmade ties of your own.

The blue denim twill colourway has a blue and cream cut check patterned back panel for a hidden detail worth finding.

A simple way to build an English summer outfit

Begin with a breathable base layer
Add a light second layer
Keep a warmer piece nearby for evening
Choose shoes that can manage grass, gravel and uneven ground
Carry a basket, tote or practical bag for the pieces you remove

The Foundation Collection and Blueprints Collection have been designed to mix and match easily, so that pieces can be worn across different seasons, settings and temperatures. Creams, naturals, blues and soft working fabrics sit comfortably together, allowing one garment to give new life to another.

A Foundation piece might become the steady base beneath a Blueprints layer. A Blueprints garment might bring colour and pattern to the quieter tones of the Foundation Collection. Together, they create outfits that feel practical, beautiful and lived in.

The Saddle Coat
£225.00

The riding coat has a long history. Shaped to allow freedom of movement on horseback, longer at the back than the front, smart enough for arrival and practical enough for the journey.

You will recognise it from every period drama you have ever loved. The Saddle Coat takes that silhouette and brings it firmly into the present. Perfect for galloping into the distance like a Victorian heroine.

Garment description

Cut from an indigo blue gingham cotton and lined with cream cotton, the Saddle Coat follows the traditional riding coat shape — shorter at the front, longer at the back, with a stand collar and buttons running the full length of the front.

The cut gives the upper body shape and definition, while the longer back hem creates a sweep and movement that is immediately recognisable. A jacket for people who appreciate a garment with a history.

The Jabot
£45.00

The Jabot has a distinguished history. Worn at the throats of judges, academics and 18th-century gentlewomen who understood that a good neckpiece could say everything a speech could not.

Garment description

We’ve reimagined the Jabot for the modern age.  Ours is made from blue and cream checked hand-loomed cotton with cream lace trim, sewn to look worn and haphazard, as though it has already lived a life before it found you.

Wear it high at the neck or low, tied at the waist, pinned as a brooch or tucked into your hair. It comes with two lengths of tie, so the choice, as ever, is entirely yours.

What to Wear to a Countryside Picnic

Countryside picnics call for clothes that are beautiful, but not too precious. You may be sitting on a blanket, walking through long grass, carrying food, or sheltering under a tree when the weather turns.

A cotton dress with a light jacket, or a skirt and blouse with a waistcoat, feels relaxed but still considered. These are the kinds of outfits An Acre of Land garments are made for: easy to move in, easy to layer, and made from natural fabrics that work with the weather rather than against it.

Flat shoes (which you can kick off and go barefoot!), a practical basket or tote, and a scarf that can double as warmth or shade will always earn their place.

What to wear for Al Fresco dining

For al fresco dining, the balance shifts slightly. A summer supper in a garden, courtyard or pub terrace asks for something a little more polished, while still being comfortable.

A blouse tucked into a our Runswick Skirt, a softly structured jacket over a dress, or layered separates in natural fabrics can feel elegant without effort. The best evening layer is one you can keep close by and put on as the candles are lit and the temperature drops.

This is where mixing pieces from the Foundation and Blueprints collections works especially well. A natural base of one of our dresses like The Gathered Dress, The Cotton Chemise or The Peek Shirt Dress can be lifted with a soft blue layer: a Blueprints piece can be steadied with the earthy simplicity of the Founding Collection.

What to wear to country fairs and summer events

The same principles apply to country fairs, open gardens, village shows and summer markets. These are days spent on grass, gravel and old stone paths, often with more walking than expected.

Choose layers that allow movement, shoes that can manage the ground, and pieces that still look good after a few hours outdoors.

A jacket or waistcoat can bring shape to a softer summer outfit, while still being practical enough for a full day outside.

An Acre of Land garments are made for these sorts of days: clothes that can be dressed up or down, worn alone or layered, and combined across collections without feeling too planned.

And don’t forget a beautiful bag to carry all your purchases in!

A linen bag with checked fabric handles sits in the bluebell woodland
